Mehriban Aliyeva finished secondary school in 1981 and married Ilham Aliyev, the son of Heydar Aliyev, in 1983. She continued her studies, in which she excelled, at the Azerbaijan Medical University and later at the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, from which she graduated in 1988. From 1988–92, Mehriban Aliyeva worked at the State Research Institute of Eye Diseases of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow. Two articles in The Times in 2005 described her as a "qualified physician"and "former eye doctor."

Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev was born in December 24, 1961, in Baku.He attended a secondary school in Baku from 1967 till 1977.In 1977, he entered the Moscow State University of International Relations (MSUIR). In 1982, upon his graduation, Mr. Aliyev had continued his education as a postgraduate student in MSUIR.During the years of 1985-1990, he gave lectures at the Moscow State University of International Relations. In 1994-2003, he was the ise-president, and later the first vise-president of the State Oil Company of theRepublic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).He had been activelyinvolved in the implementation of Heydar Aliyev’s oil strategy.
7. In October 15, 2003, her husband Ilham Aliyev was elected as the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Ilham Aliyev was elected to the second and third term of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan
8. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation, named in commemoration of the National Leader of Azerbaijan, was established on 10th of May, 2004. Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, the spouse of the President of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev became a President of the Foundation. The main goal of the foundation is to enhance the social, economic and cultural development in the country and to ensure the implementation of the large-scale projects and programs in the line with Heydar Aliyev’s ideas for progress in Azerbaijan
