The English-speaking world has great achievements in all fields: technology, science, culture and education. British and American culture is famous all over the world. When we speak about culture, we must speak about music, fine arts, literature, and cinema.

      English composers are not well-known but American composers are very famous. Gershvin who wrote Porgy and Bess is famous for using African melodies in an opera. The most famous and popular music pieces are probably Broadway musicals. Westside Story and Cats are in the treasure house of the world culture.

     English and American painters also achieved fantastic results. Canvases by such painters as Gainsborough are hunted after by art lovers. London and New York picture galleries attract tourists from all over the world . American artists started as copyists, imitating the style of European painting, but later they found their own styles. Their traditional subjects for pictures are American Indians.

      I also should mention here architecture, which uses many different styles. American skyscrapers made of concrete and glass have become a visit card of America. British architecture is more classical even nowadays. All children studying English read about Sir Christopher Wren and his works. The English architecture is very interesting because it unites many different styles which had been introduced in Britain during the ages -classicism, gothic, Norman style and others.

    English literature is an example of good style. We have been reading English and American authors for centuries. Beginning with Walter Scott and Fenimore Cooper, with Thackeray and Shakespeare, we enjoy works by Agatha Christie, Roald Dahl, Joan Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien and others...
