The settlement is located 26 km north of Kireevsk,2 km from  railway station Obolenskaya,35 km from Tula.

The appearance of the town is connected the development of brown coal, which was conducted here

since the30th years of the19th century.

July 1st, 1934 the Central Executive Committee decided to form a working settlement «Shvartsevsky».

By 1953 the coal recourses in the area of, the mines were

closed. Farther development of the settlement associated with construction in1950-60 years Bolokhovskogo Chemical plant for the production of vitamins and syntactic interecceaty

Since 2006 the town forms a municipality urban settlement Shvarts. Population of 4780 people (2010).
