The importance of Games in learning language.

If a child lives with criticism

He learns to condemn

If a child lives with hostility

He learns to fight.

If a child lives with ridicule

He learns to be shy.

If a child lives with shame

He learns guilty

If a child lives with tolerance

He learns to be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement

He learns to try his best.

If a child with praise

He learns to have faith

If a child lives with approval

He learns to like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship

He learns to find love in the word.

                                                 Dorothy Law Nolte.

It is interesting to use this poetry with the class of students to capture their interest in learning to promote self-esteem and to improve classroom behavior. The class worked on the same poem for a short period of time several times a week, learning of the verses ,what the difficult words meant, and the message of the poem reloted to them.

Games play a more important role in teaching foreign languages.I use many games in my lessons. These games are a fun way to spend or to selebrate the end of a course the last 30 minutes of a course.

For the 3-rd form I use a ball game to learn ABC.Throwing a ball I say the 1-st letter of the ABC.A student takes the ball and says the second letter and he also throws the ball to the 3-rd student saying  C. If the 4-th student doesn’t know  the name of the 4-th letter he is out of the game. And I continue the process untill   the Alphabet finishes.

Learning numerals I use a game “BINGO”Students have to count by turn; one, two, three, four and the student who has to say five must say “BINGO” instead of five. If he forgets to say “BINGO”he is out of the game. The game is continued until 100. Every 5 they must say “BINGO”I continue the process untill there is just one  student left.

Learning preposition I use this game. I draw a tree for example at first.

2. a bird on the tree.                                                                                                      3a boy under  the tree.

4 a cloud over the tree.

5.a bench by the tree.

6.an apple in the tree.

Whille I am drawing these things by turns the students can also write as  sentences in their notebook or simply    say where these things are.

This game is good for the 5-th form.I start this game with a word and then one by one go around the class and ask the student to say another English  word that begins with the last letter of the previous word. Example:if I begin with “dress”the next word might be”skirt”and then ”train”and so on.  They can write down the words on the board. If a student hesitates for too long ,or uses a word that has already been used

or calls out a word that does not really fit with the previous one, they are out of the game. The next person can then start with a word    of their choosing.I continue the process  until there is just one student left.If I   want to make the game more difficult I choose a topic to stick to.For example:verbes, nouns, may be animals.

This game is very interesting for the little ons.I prepare picture flashcards beforehands .Then I stick these flashcards on the board.I put the students into two groups. When I say the word one student  from each group runs to the board and tuches the correct word first get a point.A group

with more point will be a winner.

From my 21 years’ English   teaching practice  I know    that playing games  in learning  language make   it much easier to learn.
