Introduction.   226000 inhabitants of Ulyanovsk were called up for military service during the war. They fought heroically at the fronts. I would like to tell  you about some of them.

  HAZOV.

In the battle for Stalingrad he destroyed 22 fascists tanks. For this heroic deed he was awarded to the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.      In autumn 1942 Vladimir Hazov was killed. He got serious wounds in one of the battles.

  PETRAKOV.

During the Stalingrad’s battle Petrakov’s battalion was storming the height. Petrakov caused a fire of fascists on himself and it helped soldiers to win the battle.  Dmitry got a terrible contusion. In the hospital he wrote the letter to his wife and little daughter Mila:   “My black-eyed Mila! I’m sending you a cornflower. Can you imagine – there was a fight, enemy’s projectiles were bursting, funnels were everywhere but a flower was growing … And then another explosion… the cornflower was plucked. I took it and put in my pocket…“ Petrakov was killed in summer 1943, when he raised soldiers to an attack and they rushed into the suburbs of Orel. The fortune of this letter was unusual. To the Thirtieth anniversary of the victory on the field near Volgograd an Obelisk was made– the girl holding a cornflower in her hands. The monument was created as a soldier’s letter-triangle, which was written by Petrakov to his “black-eyed Mila”.   HOROVETZ. In summer 1942 Alexander as a part of a flight army was fighting in the Kursk Bulge. He was combating desperately and for 4 days he destroyed 7 enemy planes. On the 6th  of June 1943 he attacked enemy planes, Horowitz was the only one against twenty fascists.   It was impossible to stay alive. So June 6, 1943 was the last day in his life.  September 28, 1943 lieutenant Horovetz was rewarded with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.   MUSOROVA. Maria was born in Melikess (Now Dmitrovgrad). She graduated from Kuybyshev Medical Institute. Maria went to war as a volunteer. In 1942 she was taken prisoner and got into Ortelsburg camp. Musorova worked in a camp’s hospital and she helped prisoners a lot: she was treating wounds and even gave her blood to them. She was killed by the death injection for her sincere and great help to convicts.
